Evaluation Services

CLEAR offers a comprehensive range of evaluation services described below.

The Evaluation Services have key responsibilities for the administration of a range of surveys in order to support the development of useful longitudinal data. This framework was endorsed by the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning (SCTL) via Circular No. 1, 2008-09 in November 2008.

Data collection and quality assurance process

Undergraduate evaluation process

The undergraduate (Ug) longitudinal data collection process is illustrated below:
First Undergraduate evaluation process SEQ, then GCQ and then AQ

  • The Student Experience Questionnaire (SEQ) is administered in the second and final year of undergraduate (Ug) studies – in March of each year. Where possible, online surveys are used.

  • The Graduate Capabilities Questionnaire (GCQ) is administered one year after graduation – in June of each year. Tailored versions are possible through an additional section added to core GCQ scales. The GCQ administration is online.

  • An Alumni Questionnaire (AQ), with the same items as the GCQ core scales is administered five years post-graduation from Ug studies – around November of each year. The first administration was in November 2008. The AQ is not administered in a tailored version. The AQ administration is conducted online.

Evaluation Feedback

Results of the SEQ, GCQ & AQ are sent directly to the Department chairperson or programme coordinator only, for departmental programme review and development.

Summarized longitudinal results of the SEQ, GCQ and AQ at the faculty- and university-level are made available by members of the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning for discussion in its meetings.

Other Evaluation Services

CLEAR also provide other evaluation services that are related in some way to teaching and learning.

  • Design and testing of survey instruments
Advice from evaluation experts will be given in specifying desired learning outcomes and identifying issues for further investigation during an innovation. Identified outcomes or issues can then be transformed into questionnaire items. Survey instruments will have an appropriate pilot.

  • Online survey administration
CLEAR has a system for online survey administration, which is fast and convenient. Client departments or units need only provide an updated list of email addresses for the sample. A user friendly online survey will be sent to each member of the sample. Non-respondents can be tracked and reminders sent at an appropriate time.

  • Design and production of feedback profiles,
where appropriate, can be provided in clear and readily interpreted graphic forms.

  • Programme review and consultations; All types of evaluation data will be discussed with appropriate staff to aid interpretation, to draw conclusions and to suggest possible action strategies in support of programme review and development.
